What's the difference between copywriting and Plain English writing?

In one sense there is no real difference, because all of my writing is about communicating clearly and effectively. However, my Plain English service is used mainly by public authorities who need to communicate in a clear and jargon-free way with members of the general public. They are not usually involved with selling an idea or a product, which is ultimately how most of my copywriting skills are used.

Can you communicate very complicated or highly technical subject matter?

I have worked for a number of government departments and quasi-government organisations, and this has involved distilling complex subject matter into easy-to-understand copy. I have the experience and expertise to understand the essence of complicated issues, and to communicate this effectively.

Can you undertake major communications projects?

Yes. I am a founder of London Editors, a consortium of freelance writers and editors that was brought together to work on the Inland Revenue's Better Guidance Programme. We have subsequently worked on a number of other projects that have involved project management, research, analysis, writing, editing and proofreading. We have a broad range of skills, and we assemble a team of people to handle virtually any size of writing project.

Do you write training courses?

Yes. I have written both online and classroom-based courses on a wide range of subjects. I also work with experts who can help with structuring courses, as well as designing training materials.

Can you write instruction or maintenance manuals?

Yes. My very first job was writing operations manuals, and over the years I have written similar publications on a wide range of products and services.
