Creative proofreading of translated copy

dictionaries

English is an immensely complex language, not least because of the size of its vocabulary: there are over 500,000 words in the Oxford English Dictionary - excluding technical and scientific terms (which bring the total to close to 650,000). This presents problems for translators, because it is often difficult to pick precisely the right word in English to convey the sense of what the original writer intended. That's why some translations 'feel' foreign, even if there is nothing wrong with the English from a purely grammatical viewpoint.

I provide an editorial service on translated copy, making sure that it reads well and, where necessary, fits a creative brief. I work for advertising agencies, importing companies, non-UK companies wanting websites or literature in English and a range of other organisations. I tailor translated copy to suit the specific purpose, whether it is for an advertisement, instruction leaflet or press story.
