Creative proofreading FAQs
What kind of translations do you proofread?
I can proofread any English-language translation, although contractual and other legal documents are best read by an expert in the particular field. My specific expertise is in proofing and correcting creative material, press nformation or instruction booklets.
Do you need to see the original?
If the original is written in a European language it is very useful to see the original copy, because I can usually get a sense of what the writer was trying to say - I understand both French and German. When correcting translations from non-English originals, it is useful to see any visual material, such as the design of an advertisement or brochure.
Do you re-create advertisements?
Sometimes I will suggest changing a headline or, in rare cases, changing a visual. My experience as an advertising professional means that I understand what will work in English - or, more importantly, what will not work.
What languages do you speak?
I speak reasonably good French, and I understand German. However, neither language is good enough for me to act as a translator.
Can you arrange translations for us?
Yes. I work with a number of agencies and I can arrange translations to and from English. If required, for translations from English to a European language, I can also arrange for the copy to be proof-checked by advertising specialists in that language.
What is the cost?
This will depend on how good the original translation is and how much work I have to do in editing it. I provide a cost estimate before starting work: and if I think that the translation needs no editing, I will tell you (at no cost to you).
Have I answered your questions? If not, contact me and I will get back to you with an answer.
